Gwangjang Market's Must-Try Dish: Soonhee Bindaetteok (Mung Bean Pancake & Tim Burton’s Favorite Spot)

When visiting Gwangjang Market, one dish you absolutely must try is nokdu bindaetteok (mung bean pancake).

There are countless stalls selling bindaetteok, all competing fiercely, making it hard to tell which one is the original.

While every place looks delicious, my go-to spot is Soonhee Bindaetteok.

 

Why Soonhee Bindaetteok?

Famous director Tim Burton visited Korea for an exhibition and tried bindaetteok at Soonhee Bindaetteok.

During his second exhibition in Korea, he mentioned in an interview that the bindaetteok was so delicious that he wanted to return just for it.

I missed his first exhibition, but I was fortunate enough to attend the second one, and for that, I feel endless gratitude towards Soonhee Bindaetteok.

So, as a devoted Tim Burton fan, I always go to Soonhee Bindaetteok – and, of course, because it’s incredibly tasty!

The Menu & Ordering System

The menu is simple and straightforward.

Since it’s a prepaid system, you order and pay immediately upon sitting down.

Some places in Gwangjang Market don’t accept card payments, but Soonhee Bindaetteok does!

Since I had already eaten before visiting, I only ordered one mung bean pancake.

However, I noticed that the true bindaetteok enthusiasts order a platter of assorted jeon (Korean pancakes) along with a bottle of makgeolli (Korean rice wine) – all by themselves!

They looked so cool.

The Food Experience

Each order comes with side dishes: kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and yangpa jeolim (pickled onions).

If you order just one pancake, it is served cut in half for easy eating.

The texture is crispy and pairs perfectly with the pickled onions on top. You just can’t stop eating it!

No matter how full I am, I always make sure to stop by Soonhee Bindaetteok for at least one pancake before leaving Gwangjang Market.
